Emma is a Star at Cake International

Cake International is a highlight of most cake decorator’s years, the chance to see some live demonstrations, various competitions and even get a sneak peek at some new products. In 2011, PME hosted a live cake competition during Cake International. Our team member Emma decided to participate, and in full support of this challenge Sugar & Ice sponsored Emma’s application providing her with the time and ingredients to practice and perfect, why not meet the rest of our team here too.

The competition was to find PME’s Cake Decorator of the Year, the brief was to cover and decorate a sponge, fruit or dummy cake in three hours using PME equipment - all of which had to be done in front of a live audience!

“It was a great achievement for you all to reach the finals as the standard of work was exceptionally high this year, and it was no easy task for the judges to make their final decisions” said PME following the event, which consisted of 9 finalist being whittled down from the hundreds from all over the world, including finalists from Texas and Italy.

The competition began and attempting to block out the crowd to calm their nerves Emma and the rest of the finalists got to work. Producing beautiful works of art in the form of cake and icing, despite the heat within the NEC’s busy hall.

Wanting to showcase a range of talents, including piping and painting on sugar paste, Emma’s chosen design was a beautiful Russian doll, in royal blue and gold. Other entrants created 3-D giraffes, Cowboy Boots and Birdhouses, the talent within the competition was incredible.

As the minutes ticked on, the creations came to life and with every turn of the turntables the crowd said ‘ooh’ and ‘aahh’ in awe of the beautiful cakes being produced. The judges in charge of making the difficult decision as to who would lift the trophy of Cake Decorator of the Year were Brian Tayor, Gary Chapman, Tony Warren, Adele Condron – King and Lisa Slatter.

Finally was finishing up, all work areas were quickly cleaned and the cakes popped onto tilted turntables to be perfectly presented – it was quite like something off of The Great British Bake Off! The deliberations began with compere Pat Trunkfield (PR Director of Knightsbridge – PME) entertaining the growing crowd until finally the judges were ready to announce.

Our wonderful Emma took second prize thanks to her intricate design and brilliant technique, the only thing the judges said they wished she had done differently was to cover the cake board! It was a great achievement for Emma, showcasing the talents of Emma and Sugar & Ice!
