Sugarflair Edible Lustre Dust - Gold Sparkle

This dust is probably the most well known, as it’s been on the market for a long time now, it’s a small pot but lasts much longer than you may think. It’s dust form means that it is incredibly versatile with the ability to mix into icing, be brushed on top or when mixed with rejuvinator, clear alcohol or cocoa butter it forms a paint. Sugarflair offers a wide range of shades, including about 4 different golds. Our top pick would be the gold sparkle, it is a light shade of gold without looking yellowy. It’s relatively low in price however it’s best mixed into a paint so you will have to crack open a bottle of vodka or maybe invest in some rejuvinator spirit.

Rolkem Lustre Gel - Aztech Gold

As a premixed gel the Rolkem is a great choice for those wanting a quick use. It’s the perfect staple for any cake decorators cupboard as it can work within airbrushes and can be used straight from the bottle as a paint! This particular colour has very small pigments so it creates a great shine, we would mark this gold as medium in colour and perfect for brushing straight onto cakes or maybe even using to write on your chosen message. The Mayan Gold is also a great pick, whilst slightly more orange, perfect for egyptian gold themes. It is a alcohol based product which is worth a note, however please be aware the alcohol does evaporate fully (so make sure you don’t leave the lid off for too long!).

Rolkem Dusts - Special Gold

Similarly to the Sugarflair, the Rolkem dust is extremely versatile, it’s such a popular choice when it comes to edible colourings. With a very high pigment it’s great to even just dry brush directly onto your cakes, then you can finish them off with a quick steam to set the colour perfectly! In terms of colour it is a slightly darker shade than the sugarflair gold sparkle, it’s similar in terms of size and cost but it’s definitely proven to be popular within our stores (and amongst our team too!). Other colours include, Golden Glo and Super Gold. Rolkem have also released a Special Rose Gold and boy is it popular, it’s the perfect shade to match the 2017/18 trend.

Colour Splash Airbrush Colour - Pearl Gold

If you have an airbrush you’ll know it’s benefits, the ability to quickly cover whole cakes, flowers and even create ombre beauties. There are a vareity of different colours you can chose to use with your airbursh all at different price points. Colour splash is by far one of the cheapest, it’s a water based solution which is great for those who don’t like to use alcohol based products, however because of this you can find the product lingers in the air and can turn your room a shade of gold too!  It looks to be quite a dark shade of gold and can of course be mixed with other airbrush colours (for example a pearl to achieve a lighter shade). It’s a great bargain and well worth a try, if you haven’t yet got an airbrush why not check out our courses for the latest information on upcoming airbrush demonstrations.

Rainbow Dust Click-Twist Brush - Metallic Light Gold

If you’re looking to write onto your cake in gold and aren’t 100% confident with piping (we have a course for that too!) then this pen is the perfect choice for you. This item is a great option when decorating cakes with children as it’s water based and much more controllable than painting with a brush. Unfortunately it’s thicker brush does mean that you are less able to create fine lines like you would with a paintbrush, but it’s ready to use and has a drying time of a maximum 15 mins to avoid smudging. The colour is light so you may need to apply another coat, just make sure the first layer is dry before doing so. Rainbow Dust also have a range of metallic food paints which are ready to paint, so you can get a similar effect with a paintbrush too.

PME Edible Lustre Spray - Gold

Available in two different sizes the edible spray is wonderful for covering full cakes or just certain design elements working well with stencils. This product has again been available for quite some time and although some may find it difficult to control the spray can it’s well worth the purchase for a quick gold finish. If you do find it hard to control the spray cans there is an additional attachment which can help with this. It’s quite a shimmery gold and medium in terms of lightness. It’s quite a nice one to have in the cupboard for when you need a quick, effortless finish.

We can’t complete this post without talking about gold leaf, it’s a fantastic looking product but a pricey one at that! We’ve seen the gold trend take off and in particular cakes embellished with gold leaf, it’s the perfect luxury for a one-off wedding cake, however if this is something you are starting to do more often there are plenty of gold finishes which provide the perfect gold-look cake too! Please remember to send us all your fabulous pictures of your cakes to our Facebook page!
